NELSON ROLIHLAHLA MANDELA
1918 – 2013

Tata Madiba

Mandela if his own words

“During my lifetime, I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination.

“I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons will live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for. But, my lord, if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.”

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela
Statement from the dock at the opening
of his defense case in the Rivonia trial in April 1964

“Let there be justice for all. Let there be peace for all. Let there be work, bread, water and salt for all.

“Let each know that for each the body, the mind and the soul have been freed to fulfil themselves.

“Never, never and never again shall it be that this beautiful land will again experience the oppression of one by another and suffer the indignity of being the skunk of the world.

“Let freedom reign.”

Some of his achievements

For this blog out of Mandela’s many achievements, two are unparalleled:

First, he was the world’s most inspiring example of fortitude, magnanimity and dignity in the face of oppression, serving more than 27 years in prison for his belief that all men and women are created equal.

Second, was the way in which he engineered and oversaw South Africa’s transformation from a byword for nastiness and narrowness into a rainbow nation in which people, no matter what their colour, were entitled to be treated with respect.

An inspiration to millions

I am one of the countless millions who drew inspiration from Nelson Mandela’s life.

Barack Obama
President, United States of America

Dr. Mandela served as a source of inspiration to the oppressed peoples all over the world.  In the course of his life-long epic struggle for freedom, fairness, justice, equity and the human rights of his oppressed people, Dr. Mandela made unparalleled personal sacrifices.
